I will have to say that original The Legend Of Zelda is still one of my favorite games of all time.
And it is among the best of the classics of the Nintendo Entertainment System.
But, let’s talk about the “stepchild” that came next for the franchise.
That “stepchild” is Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link.

This game is the sequel to The Legend Of Zelda.
Link is tasked with awakening Princess Zelda from a wizard’s sleeping spell.
Zelda will be awakened when Link collects crystals from the temples, which replace the dungeons found in the origninal.
So, What’s Right With The Game?
MAGIC
Link is able to cast spells to help in his quest.
The game has several villages.
These villages have wise men that can teach Link various spells needed to complete the game.
RPG ELEMENT
Zelda 2 allows you to build your character along the way.
You can build your attack power and magic meter as you progress.
This is done by killing enemies.
This is a nice change of pace from the previous etnry in the series and provided replay value.
SIDE SCROLLING
This is an interesting aspect of the gameplay.
In addition to learning magic in the villages, you will also learn new sword attacks.
And this adds a new twist to the gameplay that is not poorly done.
It definitely takes an adjustment, especially coming from the original Legend Of Zelda gameplay.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE GAME
DIFFICULTY
The game is EXTREMELY difficult and gets difficult too fast.
Even as you grow your attacks and magic, you feel powerless against endless enemies.
And later in the game when it gets difficult, it doesn’t let up.
NO GANNON!
Even though you see his silhouette on the end game screen, you will never get to play against him.
It may be a minor gripe but never seeing him in the game is a bit disappointing.
YOU ALWAYS START FROM THE BEGINNING
At the start of each game, you will be placed in a temple where you can see the sleeping Zelda.
It is from this temple where you start the game.
Every time you start the game, it is from this place.
And you have to travel all across the land from that very temple.
It is definitely a frustrating point of emphasis.
However, you do get an item to make this a little better.
But at the same time, you will have to start from that temple every time.
NO MASTER SWORD
As we know, most Zelda titles revolve around finding the master sword to defeat Gannon.
That is not the case here.

Not necessarily a bad point of the game but it is my personal peeve.
SO, WHAT’S THE VERDICT
While I won’t call it a piece of trash, I can’t say it is a masterpiece either.
The fact of treating a Zelda title like a RPG is different.
But the game gets too difficult too fast.
And that can take away the fun factor for some.
Challenge for the gamer should be welcome but at a proper pace.
The challenge picks up early in Zelda 2 and barely lets up.
I would advise picking this one up and playing, especially if you love a challenge.
