Why Metal Gear Solid 2 Is The Most Important Game Of The Franchise
NOTE: This post WILL contain spoilers, so read with that in mind!!!
The Metal Gear Solid series is one of the most intriguing series in video gaming history.
Cinematic cutscenes, great storytelling and attention to detail still defines this series to this day.
With so many great games in the series, it is hard to pick a favorite for most gamers.
But I will say that Metal Gear Solid 2 is the most important game in the series.

Now before you guys jump all over me……
Let me explain……
MGS 2 has several factors that can conclude that it is one of the most vital and important games of the series.
Follow me below as I explain my reasoning.
We Learn Who The Patriots Are
The recurring theme of the Metal Gear Solid series is the fight against the Patriots.
In most of the other games of the series prior to this one, we have to guess who the Partiots are.
MGS 2 shows us who the Patriots actually are.
We see the shadow organization from the lenses of Ocelot (Liquid) and the actual AI version of the Patriots themselves.
Later in the game, we learn that the Patriots is actually a series of AIs as the original founding members have mostly passed away.
This version of the Patriots censors information to their liking to manipulate people.
The videos below show us the Patriots and what it is they do to control nearly everything from commerce to government.
All the videos below are from the IGN Walkthroughs YouTube Channel.
We See Shadow Moses Through Different Eyes
Another reason you could consider Metal Gear Solid 2 is the important game in the series is that we see the events of Shadow Moses from a different perspective.
We see Shadow Moses through the eyes of Foxhound operative Raiden, who was the main protagonist of this particular game.
This game serves as a test of the Patriots to see how recreating the events of Shadow Moses would work in the Big Shell.
The appearance of the cyborg ninja, the death of Ames, the Harrier battle, the rescue of the president and even the disc that mimicked the Foxdie virus all remind us of Shadow Moses.
And Raiden never seemed to be able to place the pieces together and it is interesting to see his growing distrust of the Colonel throughout the game.
We See ALL Of Big Boss’s Son’s Together (Sort Of)
Another reason for the importance of Metal Gear Solid 2 is because of the three sons of Big Boss sharing time together in the game.
Sort of…LOL.
Solidus is the perfect genetic clone of Big Boss.
We learn that Liquid and Solid Snake are brothers from Metal Gear Solid.
While aboard Arsenal Gear, the personality and persona of Liquid comes through Ocelot.
Seriously, its a long story..LOL
Liquid still seems to not have forgiven Snake for the genetics given to him by Big Boss.
This seem to be the recurring theme of the series.
In the video below, we see the persona of Liquid leak through the game.
We See Solidus Snake In Action
Another reason that this game is one of the most important in the series is the appearance of Solidus Snake.
Solidus had a part in the events of Shadow Moses but we see him for the first time on screen in a MGS game.
It would have been nice to get him with more screen time at least we see a bit into who he is.
The amazing exoskeleton and skill is on display in brief moments of the game.
We see that Solidus have legitimate reasons for wanting to defy the Patriots despite being the villain with questionable actions.
It was good to see him, even for the brief action cues he had in this game.
Conclusion
Now, I can show my bias in saying that this is my favorite MGS game of the series.
I haven’t played every game but I have played most titles.
In my opinion, nothing has the appeal of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty.
I am glad to see the series still going strong.
This gives younger fans of the next generation consoles a chance to see this series for themselves.
