Critics Are Everywhere…
Thanks to social media, critics are louder than ever.
And everyone is a judge.
While there is nothing wrong with social media per se, most social media users have a way of making people feel inferior.
This can make it difficult for people to enjoy their fandoms in peace.
That is especially true with reference to anime.
As a fan of anime, I have often heard it said that you can’t be Christian and enjoy anime.
I don’t know what this kind of thinking stems from.

But it is not accurate.
Let me explain why below.
3 Reasons Why Anime Is NOT Bad for Christians!
Here are a few reasons why I think anime is not a bad thing for Christians.
ANIME IS AN ARTFORM
Anime is art.
It is a Japanese form of animation.
While any form of creativity can be manipulated, there is nothing inherently wrong with anime.
Creativity is a gift from God, so this means there is nothing wrong with enjoying or reading anime.
ANIME CAN BE USED TO DRAW OTHERS INTO THE KINGDOM
There is a digital mission field for Christians to take advantage of.
And there are perhaps millions of people who enjoy anime, cartoons, video games and comics.
Christians can use these shared fandoms to connect with other believers or nonbelievers.
We can use anime as a tool to:
- Start conversation that leads to kingdom witness.
- To create meaningful relationships from the shared fandom.
We can even create anime content in efforts to draw others into the kingdom.
When we can share the fandoms of others, we allow room for meaningful relations that can lead to sharing the gospel.
Here are a few pictures I have drawn from My Hero Academia.
These pictures are of Midoriya and All Might.

ANIME TEACHES GREAT THEMES
I’m currently watching the first season of My Hero Academia.
(I know I’m late to the party but don’t judge me…LOL)
There are great themes I have noticed in the show.
These themes include:
- Heroism, that anyone of us can become a hero.
- Unselfishness, putting others first.
- Teamwork, working together to accomplish a common goal.
- Confidence and self esteem
- Courage in the midst of adversity
When you look at these themes, they are things we can consider in our everyday lives.
That is the power of something like anime.
It has the ability to share difficult subjects and themes in a way that makes them understandable.
When used properly, anime can be a teaching tool, a means to encourage and even share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Conclusion
I will not dispute that there are some bad forms of anime out there.
But there are bad forms of everything, like movies and television.
However, forms of creativity like anime can be used to encourage and build up others.
No form of creativity is bad.
It is what we do with that creativity that makes it good or bad, in my opinion.
