ROCKY: THE ULTIMATE UNDERDOG

What made Rocky special?
I will tell you what it is.
Rocky Balboa is most, if not all, of us.
Underestimated..
Written off…
This the ultimate underdog story.
And we identify with that.
The series has had some great hits, including the first 2 movies of the franchise.
But I would like to reminisce on the more lackluster entry in the franchise, in my opinion.
ROCKY 5: FAR FROM A KNOCKOUT!
Let me sum up Rocky 5 for you a bit.
After a brutal fight with Ivan Drago, Rocky learns that he has permanent brain damage.
To add insult to injury, Rock also finds out that he is broke.
So, he moves back to the old neighborhood in Philly.
Rocky opens up his old trainer’s gym and finds a possible protégé in Tommy Gunn.
The relationship between Rocky and Tommy seems to put a strain on Rocky’s family.
Below is a video from the JohnVexer YouTube channel featuring the Rocky V Trailer.
THE GOOD
- The movie manage shows the humanity of Rocky and his struggles to strengthen the bond with his family.
- This movie shows the emotional fight of Rocky to feel like a man after losing his money.
- Rocky seems to see himself within Tommy Gunn, which creates an interesting dynamic.
- The music! The music has always had great energy throughout the series and Rocky V is no exception.
THE BAD
- The series seems to be reaching at this point for something to keep the franchise going, and this entry seems to be a bit off.
- Seems a bit rushed.
- Not enough of Rocky and his son on screen together. I would have liked to see this interaction more.
- A street fight was not necessarily a fitting end for this movie, in my opinion.
CONCLUSION
Like I said earlier…
This is not a bad movie, but it is not on par with the standard of the prior entries in the franchise.
While I think it does have redeeming qualities, it is lacking as far as one of the better entries.
But if you are a fan of the series, it is worth viewing.
Thank you for reading this brief opinion of mine on Rocky V.
