Best Video Game Based Movie?

Well, we do know one thing.

Cinema and video games haven’t had the best of relationships.

I think because the fantasy world of most video games is hard to replicate.

Especially when it comes to on screen action.

After all, look at what happened to our beloved Super Mario Bros.

The Super Mario Bros. movie post from Wikipedia.

Needless to say, that was not the most finest moment for video game-movie adaptations.

But, that doesn’t mean that there weren’t some good attempts.

Well, at least in my opinion anyway.

Here are a few movies that I think were good video game movie adaptations.

Best Video Game Movies

Here are a few of the choices that I came up with.

Feel free to leave yours in the comment section.

MORTAL KOMBAT (1995)

Not a perfect movie but it did something that the Super Mario Bros didn’t….

STICK TO THE SOURCE MATERIAL…

And they pretty much go it right, as far as the plot.

The action was well done, especially the Johnny Cage vs Scorpion scene.

Here is the video of the Johnny Cage vs Scorpion battle from the FLASHBACK FM YouTube Channel.

One of my only peeves with the movie is that they kinda made Goro seem like a mindless idiot.

The movie is a product of its time and is the better choice in my opinion.

ASSASSIN’S CREED (2016)

With the plot of a lineage of hired killers, this was prime for a movie adaptation.

And it is well done, in my opinion.

Seems like this should be more of series of films, given the longevity of the Assassin’s Creed game franchise.

But the movie does seem a bit unfinished in my opinion.

Yet, it was a good enough work not to be on the Super Mario Bros. end of the spectrum.

Here is the Assassin’s Creed trailer from the 20th Century Studios YouTube channel.

RAMPAGE (2018)

Ok, let’s be honest.

Rampage has no story, even as a video game.

But, I mainly put this one as I love monster movies.

And this is a good one, in my opinion.

When you put Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with a couple of giant monsters, you can get some good out of it.

Conclusion

As an aside, I give honorable mention to Hitman (2007).

So, why is it hard to create a video game into a movie?

Here is what I think.

You have the expectation of video gamers (which can be high and unfair)

Then you have the limitations of a Hollywood budget.

You also have movie directors and producers who are not as connected with the gaming culture.

It is hard to create the fantasy world of video games into the big screen.

The task to perfectly match the fantasy world of say like a Legend Of Zelda is a near impossible task for even a mind like George Lucas or Steven Spielberg.

Now, I have not seen every video game movie adaptations so I am limited to my own conclusions.

What do you guys think of my choices?
