Remember When…
Remember when we had to actually leave the house to play a video game?
I do remember.
My mom worked at a convenience store.
My dad and I would wait on her until the end of her shift.
I would take that opportunity to play arcade games like Street Fighter.

Then I got a Nintendo.
This allowed gamers like me to save those quarters and play from home.
There was nothing like looking at that gray box knowing that fun was just a button press away.
BUT….
Things have drastically changed since the days of the Atari and original NES.
There was an age where physical media was king.
From cassette tapes to CD’s to DVD’s to Blu-Ray discs, we had many options and flavors.
Now, in 2026, physical media is becoming a thing of the past. (to some people)
Sony Goes Digital
News came recently that Sony Playstation will feature only digital games in 2028.
Here is my reaction to this news.
It makes business since for Sony.
Subscriptions are everywhere.
We can subscribe to people to shop for groceries for us, movie/show streaming like Netflix, and even music apps ask us to pay to listen to songs.
I assume that it is not as profitable to make physical discs for gaming as it is to ask gamers to subscribe to a paid gaming service.
This seems to be a business decision that affects a company’s bottom line.
HOWEVER….
This sucks for gamers.
Power is totally taken away from gamers to choose whether they want to play physical or digital games.
Also, I feel for collectors of physical media that may want to have a boxed version of a title.
Gamers will be only left with the option of playing digital games, which can be a turn-off to some hardcore gaming fans.
As a gamer, I think that we should have the power to choose what to play and how we play.
CONCLUSION
Sony goes totally digital in 2028.
This is favorable for Sony as a business but not to gamers.
Gamers don’t have to ability to choose how they will play their games, which is not fair in my opinion.
