MGS’s Recurring Theme
KEPT YOU WAITING, HUH?!
If you’re a fan of the Metal Gear Solid series, you will notice a theme recurring within the series.
No, I’m not talking about Snake’s bandana or smoking habit…LOL
I’m talking about “the ability to choose.”
Metal Gear Solid is a story about “the will.”
Will can be defined as…
The power to control one’s own actions and emotions.
As humans, we all desire some sort of control of our individual destinies.
The Boss, from MGS 3, desired to see the world whole.

Her will was misinterpreted by both Big Boss and Zero.
This rift has been the underlying theme in all of the MGS games.

Only after countless lives have been lost and the destinies of many altered, Big Boss realized he misinterpreted the will of The Boss.
Zero’s misinterpretation of The Boss’s will nearly brought the world to the brink of destruction, specifically looking at the events of MGS 4.
So, what’s the lesson?
The lesson is that men, left to their own devices and thoughts, will misinterpret the purpose and the meaning of life.
We will spend (and waste) time chasing the wrong pursuits, only to feel empty at the end of it all.
However, God presents to us a better way.
God’s Will
If you are on the outside looking in, you may think that God is no better than the Patriots of the Metal Gear Solid franchise.
And that is a good thought to consider.
However, God’s will for our lives is designed for our good.
Here are some words from Jesus to prove this point.
John 10: 10 (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Another verse referenced is from John 11: 25 (ESV).
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.”
God’s will for our lives is perfect.
This doesn’t mean that everything will be smooth sailing.
It DOES mean that all things will work out for us as long as we look to God as our source.
I know it can sound like being a Christian is no different from being Snake or Raiden or Meryl.
However, Christians follow the will of a loving father, not an algorithm feeding off of the war economy.
The will of God for a Christian is to serve others and evangelize.
Christians have free will in how they serve.
Some may open a soup kitchen for the homeless, teach Bible study to underserved communities, open a small business that employs the disabled, and the list goes on.
The Patriots rarely accounted for human emotion and never seemed to care about the importance of human life.
However, God cares for our spirits and the state of our souls.
God’s love for us trumps The Patriots’ corrupted mainframe.
