The Gameboy: More Than a Game!

Today In Gaming History!

37 years ago today, the Gameboy was released in North America.

The Nintendo handheld set the gaming world on fire.

On July 31, 1989, gamers got the chance to “PLAY WITH POWER” in their hands.

I remember when I first got my Gameboy.

Being able to play video games without tv was awesome!

And having a Gameboy was a source of pride.

There are 3 things that made the Gameboy amazing in my opinion.

3 Things That Made the Gameboy Awesome.

Here are 3 things that made the Gameboy awesome to me.

TETRIS

Every console, handheld or not, needs a game that sets it apart.

Tetris was that game for the Gameboy.

The Gameboy and Tetris were a match made in heaven.

It’s one of those “easy to play, hard to master” kind of games.

Tetris is still a lot of fun to play.

VIDEO GAMES ARE HERE TO STAY

Nintendo was such an important part of my life.

I watched Captain N: The Gamemaster religiously.

I was hooked on Super Mario Bros. 3.

I rented video games from my local rental store.

Most people thought that video games would be a fad that wouldn’t last.

However, the Gameboy was a phenomenon that couldn’t be ignored.

This told me, as a gamer, that video games weren’t going anywhere.

I thought the original NES would last forever and that the Gameboy couldn’t get any better.

As a gamer, I was invested fully into the Nintendo and Gameboy lore.

NINTENDO’S AMAZING LIBRARY

The NES had an amazing library of games.

Batman….Super Mario Bros….Mega Man….

All of these characters had great moments on the NES.

Now to experience all of this on the Gameboy was exciting!

Even though the games weren’t perfect NES replicas most of the time, we still got to enjoy some great gaming moments.

To be able to play Nintendo games on a handheld device was peak gaming.

BONUS: Shared Gaming Experiences

There is one thing I lament about entertainment today.

Video games, movies, and television seem to be missing some magic.

We had shared experiences together.

We watched the same shows, enjoyed the same movies, played the same games at the same time.

We watched TGIF and Saturday morning cartoons at the same time.

The release of the Gameboy gave us another experience that we could have together.

We talked Tetris high scores.

We consulted Nintendo Power for new releases.

We shared this great experience of handheld gaming together.

Conclusion

I had a Gameboy growing up but couldn’t afford a lot of games.

Thanks to emulation, I am able to experience the games from the Gameboy’s extensive library.

There are so many amazing games I never knew about.

Most of the Gameboy library still holds up well.
