Genesis Did!
You can’t do that with Nintendo!!!!!!!!!
And it is that kind of statement that fueled the 16-bit console wars.
It was gamers who won that 16-bit console war.
This was started 37 years ago.
The Sega Genesis was released in North America on August 14, 1989.
Video game fans had plenty reason to celebrate.
The Sega Genesis had bright colors, unique controllers, and a terrific lineup of games that are still fun to play today.
I’m sure that most of you reading this will have fond memories of playing the Sega Gensis for the first time.

I didn’t get my Genesis at the North American release date.
I was TOO obsessed with Nintendo.
It was hard for me to see anything rivaling the NES.
However, I was wrong.
The Sega Genesis went toe to toe with Nintendo.
Just when gamers were amazed with the Genesis already, we were introduced later to Sonic the Hedgehog.
The little blue blur set the gaming world on fire.
This even had Super Mario sweating. (LOL)
My Sega Genesis Memories
Like I mentioned, I got the Sega Genesis maybe a year or two after release.
The first game I played on the Sega Genesis was Sonic the Hedgehog.
I was absolutely blown away with how fast Sonic was.
See, I was used to playing Super Mario Bros.
Mario is very slow in comparison to Sonic.
My favorite core memory on the Sega was playing Sports Talk Football, Madden, and Bulls vs Blazers.
So, yes, sports games are part of my favorite memories of the Genesis.
The sports games for the NES were mostly clunky and not enjoyable.
(That is outside of the Tecmo football games)
In contrast, the Sega Genesis sports titles were fun and colorful for me.
Another core memory for me was THE COMMERCIALS!!!!!!
We all know this one…”GENESIS DOES WHAT NINTENDON’T.”
Here is the classic Sega commercial from the Alethia YT Channel.
Nintendo and Sega traded commercial ad space blows.
And I LOVED every moment of it.
It was a 16-bit console war and gamers were the ones winning!
Conclusion
The Sega Genesis was (and still is) a great console.
Most of the games still hold up well.
Unfortunately, Sega is out of the console business.
We still have access to the amazing library of Genesis games.
Thankfully, I’m able to play most of the Genesis titles on my Xbox One through compilations and from emulation.
You and I can revisit some of the titles we love and even titles we didn’t get to play during the life cycle of the Sega Genesis.
Remember, there are some things that Genesis does that other video game consoles don’t!
